ESCODA JULIA BARMINOVA Set 3 brushes Watercolour. 8615-1 At the end of 1933, Josep Escoda Roig (1902-1982), due to a series of coincidences that would make this a long story, decided to create in Sabadell, a town near Barcelona, a small company of brushes and paintbrushes for Decoration and Fine Arts. It would be the first factory to exist in Spain. Until then, artists had to obtain brushes manufactured in France and Germany. The activity of that small business would only stop as a consequence of the Civil War, but in the early 1940s it resumed the manufacture of the best brushes available, despite the difficulties in obtaining raw materials. The Escoda brush factory continued to develop and grow. To date, probably 75 million brushes have been made, almost a million per year of existence. Josep's obsession with making the best brushes was passed on to his children, Josep and Ricard, and they passed it on to their children, Anna, Ricard, Marc and Josep.

Laurin McCracken (Meridian, Mississippi, United States) is an award-winning realist watercolorist who has applied her skills as an architect and photographer to watercolor. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the Fabriano Museum of Watercolor in Italy, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Museum of the University of Mississippi, and other institutions; he has also participated in exhibitions all over the world. Currently, he is the Country Leader for the FabrinaoinAcquarello 2023 and the Chair of the FabrianoinAquarello Advisory Committee. In addition, he Works teaching watercolor to future artists in the making.

The artist inspiration

According to Laurin McCracken his work is largely influenced by by the Dutch and Flemish painters of the 16th and 17th centuries. His work highlights the high level of detail that is not tipically associated with the médium of watercolor, but can be easily observed in his paintings. One of his references is the quote by Henry David Thoreau: “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see” that he applies to his watercolors to add value. He himself defines being an artist as the combination of those abilities and a fundamental mastery of the craft that makes artists. Laurin McCracken’s favorite brushes: “In my own painting, my first choice is always the Kolinsky Reserva brushes. But, because I want to know what I am recommending to my classes, I most often paint with the Versàtil or Chronos brushes. Over the past few years, when painting an important painting (either a major commission or one that I want to submit to a major competition) I will usually paint with my Reserva Brushes immediately at hand and my Versàtil brushes right away behind them. When I need a stiffer brush, I want to have the Versàtil handy. In summary: the majority of the artists I see could do almost anything within their capability, and do it better, with a Versàtil brush. The better painters should be delighted with the way that the Chronos brushes handle.”

Escoda Primera Teijin is a maroon-colored synthetic with thicker and stiffer fibers for work with heavier bodied paints. Primera Teijin is especially recommended for heavy body acrylics and water mixable oils, because the synthetic fibers will not absorb water and soften with use. The Teijin fiber holds its shape extremely well with fantastic spring. Escoda specially cures each brush for increased resiliency and versatility, making it a pleasure to use. Although not as firm as most synthetic bristle, Teijin fibers are much stiffer than Escoda Tadami or synthetic sable. The long black lacquered handle offers plenty of control on canvas and is secured to the nickel ferrule with Escoda's exclusive triple crimping process. Escoda is unusual for offering most sizes of the Primera Teijin line in both a long- and short-handle format. The long-handle style is for easel style painting, while the short handle style is best for horizontal work, such as on a tabletop. Many artists use a combination of both long- and short-handle brushes, especially for acrylic media.   Brush sizes - The length and width of a brush of a given shape and size may vary by manufacturer as brush sizes are not standardized. Since fine art brushes are handmade, expect some variation even among brushes from within a single brush line.
